The Greatest Easter Egg Hunt

Website Copy:If we are being honest, Jesus said some crazy things.  The question that I’ve been dealing with is how in the world could He think it was ok to say those things?  Tune in this week to listen just what it was that gives Him the right to say them and ultimately to give you unparalleled access to God. Need prayer? visit to post a request.Subscribe to our podcast on your phone to automatically have new messages downloaded weekly: in iTunes ( or Android (

MEMORIZE: John 4:10SCRIPTURE STUDY: John 4, John 7, Revelation 21:6
OPENING: [idea:  have everyone bring a bottle of water and see who can drink the fastest] I have a little known special talent… I can drink a HUGE cup of water in under 5 seconds… If you know me, you know that I am a WATER drinker -Jenni makes fun of me because I drink so much water… -I’m pretty sure I drink more water in a day than she does in a week…
It’s basically my super power…
WE: But we’ve all had those moments when we are crazy thirsty, right? The moments where you’ve been working outside or in the field all day without a sip of water -the sun is blazing hot -your lips are dry, your mouth is dry, everything’s dry and all you want is water…
In those moments, I can chug a gallon of water if I needed to…
TAKE THE TURN:Today, I want to examine an idea that Jesus taught about a few times that has to do with water and thirst
It’s high noon – hottest part of the day Jesus is in a foreign land – for us it would be Oklahoma 🙂 -He’s sitting on the edge of a well by Himself – His disciples have gone into town to get lunch…
when a woman comes to the well, by herself -this is unusual – normally, a woman would come early in the mornin to get water or in the evening and would not come alone
This woman is an outcast – she’s been married 5 times and living with someone who’s not her husband -she’s there at the hottest part of the day – sun beating down, because she’s the worst of the worst
Some of you know what that’s like…
Jesus does something super odd – actually, I think Jesus is there specifically so He can meet this woman.  So he broaches the conversation and asks her for a drink… -she’s startled, taken aback
“How could He be asking her for a drink…”
and then Jesus says something crazy…John 4:1010 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”
this is not the only time Jesus will talk about Living Water… In John chapter 7 Jesus will be at the Festival of Tabernacles -this is like the coolest Jewish Holiday
They literally would make tents and camp out and have a huge festival – people would come from all over and you would see fires late into the night and hear all the people from all over…
Each day of the festival, for 7 days, there would be a parade, the Priests would go down to the pool of Siloam and draw water into a golden pitcher – when the parade reached the water gate a shofar horn would be blown – people would sing songs and pray for God to bring rain and the priests would pour out the water on the altar asking God to send rain.
Both for their crops and for their cisterns, because by this point, their water wells were running dry…
And so, on the 7th day, Jesus stands up and and says this in the midst of all this going on…
John 7:37-3937 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”[c39 By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.
Again, Jesus says He is going to give people living water…
Here’s the deal – Jesus wasn’t the only one to talk about living water -in the Old Testament Living water was use to talk about the presence of GodJeremiah 2:13“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me,    the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns,    broken cisterns that cannot hold water.
Or in Zechariah, God is talking about the day He will come and rescue Jerusalem and fight for them and He says this…Zechariah 14:8On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.
Jesus is making a claim that He is the conduit to accessing God He is the only way… Whoever believes in Him will have living water flow from within them Jesus has the right to give the living water
He is the one who controls the access to the presence of God -that’s even what John says about this
By this he meant the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified.”
Jesus is making an incredible claim – that if you want access to God, you have to go through Him
Here’s the question I’ve been asking myself
How can Jesus say such a bold statement-I mean, for a moment just assume you don’t know anything about Him -for a moment, pretend you don’t believe in Him…
What Jesus is saying sounds crazy – “I can give you living water – the very presence of the living God
If you aren’t a Christian, maybe you are sitting there thinking, “thank you for finally saying it…” -this stuff is crazy
Here’s the deal – that’s only true if Jesus didn’t raise from the dead
Actually, if you didn’t know it, all of Christianity hangs on one thing -the resurrection of Jesus -if that hook can hold up, then none of the rest of it matters -we should all go home…
But, if Jesus actually raised from the dead – then that gives everything else he said authority – like, “I can give you access to God”
CLOSING: So, let me tell you why I believe the resurrection of Jesus… See, there isn’t a serious scholar who doesn’t believe that Jesus lived and died… -we also have historical accounts of Jesus and His followers – even accounts from people who weren’t Christians…
Here’s what gets me about all of it -Jesus’ disciples – all the people who claimed to have seen Him alive after His death – they all died because of the belief… -they all chose to die rather than to say it was all just a hoax or made up
People will die for a lie if they don’t know it was a lie or if they are crazy -but for 10 of Jesus’ disciples to die because they would not change their testimony about seeing Jesus alive is as compelling as it gets for me… -they died because of they actually saw Jesus raised from the dead…
Jesus’ resurrection changes EVERYTHING -it means that Jesus can actually give you access to God
Isaiah 55:6-76 Seek the Lord while he may be found; call to him while he is near. 7 Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, so he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will freely forgive.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but I’m telling you for me – before I knew Jesus, life felt empty – it felt dry when I returned to Him, when I abandoned my old life for His life -I found life that was like water welling up in me… -if you see good in me – let me assure you, that’s all Jesus
Isaiah says to seek the Lord while He may be found -Today is your moment to Find Him…  This is the greatest Easter Egg hunt of all time -to Find that Easter is really about finding Jesus!
